Day 9

Today at monde primary school we continued our talk on geography. I lack any teaching experience so thought it was important to at least drill what we had already into the children so that it would not be forgotten. Normans frustration was clear when children could not answer simple questions. I had to make him understand that due to the lack of resources and learning in two languages was a big factor in their slow progress. I found that when Norman was teaching he had respect from the children. He used what I found to be old fashioned techniques but what would be best with the lack of resources he has to offer them.

Two other volunteers brought sugar treats for the children at the orphanage this afternoon. It’s was raining and this combination was a handful. We had hyped up kids stuck inside. Fun but exhausting.

Day 8 on the community project Victoria Falls Zimbabwe

Today we started at another monde village garden clearing dead maze plants and turning soil to prepare for replantation. We came across a chameleon and quickly learned the African locals thoughts on the creature. Norman squealed like a girl when we approached him. They believe they change colour to hide from god while performing evil and that their non synced eyes cannot be trusted. We snacked on corn to get us through the hard work.

Missing the kiddies so much and was looking forward to a lunch time visit. I told Sima that I was looking to contribute to Tebu and JoJos education and have decided to pay their school fees. She was thrilled and expressed her desire for the children to understand how much this would do for their future.

This afternoon I was lucky to spend a huge amount of time playing with senwe and savuti. It’s so tempting to fall on the floor and roll around with them but I constantly have to remind myself that they are wild lions and respect their strength and instinct especially as I am not so familiar to them.
